We have transformed a quarter-acre lot in the 2nd Street Park in Gypsum into the Community Garden. This initiative aims to provide nutritional education to the public, as well as nourish the community by donating produce to the local food pantries. Together we can plant the seeds of a healthier and more connected city. Garden Size and Layout Our garden spans approximately a quarter acre, offering individual raised bed plots that range in size from 4’ x 8’ to 4’ x 12’. Each plot is carefully designed to provide ample space for a variety of plants while allowing gardeners to manage their space effectively. Organic Practices We are proud to be a fully organic garden. This means no synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers are used. Instead, we focus on natural methods such as composting, crop rotation, and companion planting to enrich the soil and protect our plants. Our commitment to organic gardening ensures a healthier environment for both our gardeners and the community. Raised Beds Our raised beds are thoughtfully constructed using untreated wood to ensure no harmful chemicals leach into the soil. Each bed is approximately 4x8 feet] and is built with accessibility in mind, allowing gardeners of all ages and abilities to participate. We fill the beds with a mix of rich compost, organic soil, and mulch, providing the perfect foundation for growing healthy, vibrant plants. Food Forest In addition to our garden plots, we are cultivating a thriving food forest. This permaculture-inspired area includes a variety of fruit trees, berry bushes, and perennial plants that work together to create a self-sustaining ecosystem. Our food forest provides a continuous supply of fresh, organic produce, while also supporting local wildlife and promoting biodiversity. As of Fall 2024, we have two cherry trees and one pear tree. The Food Stand Our garden is not just about growing food; it’s about sharing it with the community. At our Food Stand, we offer fresh, organic produce directly from the garden to those in need. This stand operates on a pay-what-you-can model, ensuring everyone has access to nutritious, locally grown food. We believe in food justice and work to ensure no one in our community goes hungry. |
